UPTON — Upton Historical Society will host a daylong tour of Forest Lodge and The Winter House where “We Took to the Woods” was written in the early years of World War II by Louise Dickinson Rich. The trip is planned for Saturday, July 19, from 8 a.m. to about 4 p.m. No rain date is planned.
The visit includes round-trip transportation, a special tour of Middle Dam and a box luncheon prepared by the Upton Ladies Aid including various sandwiches on homemade breads, drinks, fresh fruit and decadent desserts.
Aldro French, known as “The Keeper of The House,” who has owned the property for many years and has worked diligently to preserve the essence of this special place, will be the host for this visit. Spectacular views and sounds of Rapid River and the surrounding areas will greet visitors.
See the history that came into the Winter House in the wallpapered articles Louise and Ralph pasted up during the long winters. See her personal book collection including the book they used to guide them through the birthing process of their children.
Many photographs never published adorn the walls of Forest Lodge. The huge fireplace surrounded by a piano, books and games of all kinds will show how time was spent back then when not fishing.
Tickets are $65 each person. Transportation will leave at 8 a.m. sharp on July 19. Parking is available.
