ROCKLAND — The first Summer Solstice 5K will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, June 21, at The First Bank, 63 Union St.

The race is Go! Malawi’s fourth race of the 2014 Race Series. The nonprofit is continuing to raise funds for their education program, which supports orphans and other vulnerable children in rural Malawi. Primarily the program provides scholarships for students to go to school in Malawi and Maine.

This race is held during the annual Summer Solstice Street Festival on Main Street in Rockland. Walkers, runners and well-behaved dogs are all welcome. Registration starts at 4:30 p.m. Participants can also pre-register at RunSignUp.com or Active.com or via www.go-malawi.org.

The annual 5K race series is organized by local volunteers from Team Go! Malawi. This team consists of local walkers and runners who share a common vision: “To Run With a Purpose, For a Purpose.” They are looking for a few more team members to join them in their destination marathon or half-marathon this fall. Anyone interested in running for the team or joining Team Go! Malawi may contact race director Andrew Bonarrigo at masonman321@yahoo.com, or Go! Malawi board members Reade Brower at Reade@freepressonline.com or Janet Littlefield at Janet@go-malawi.org, the organization’s executive director.
