United New Auburn Association

AUBURN — United New Auburn Association Meeting has been scheduled for May 27, at 6 p.m. at Rolly’s Diner in New Auburn.

Alan Manoian, Economic Development Specialist, and Geoff Low, Deputy Fire Chief, will speak. Manoian will give a talk about the St. Louis bells and Low will discuss the levels of service and community expectations of the Fire Department.

There will be refreshments and a $25 cash prize.

This meeting is open to the public and all are welcome.

Decoration Day service on May 30

LEWISTON — Members of the George Armstrong Custer Post No. 7 Grand Army of the Republic Association will hold a memorial service in observation of Decoration Day at 1 p.m. Friday, May 30, at the grave site of Stephen L. T. Mariner in Riverside Cemetery.

Pvt. Mariner died in the Confederate Prison, Salisbury, S.C., on Dec. 1, 1864, at age 20.

The program will include invocation by Donald T. Dube, chaplain, American Legion Post 22; reading of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address by Lorna Jollymore; reading of Gen. John A. Logan’s general order No. 11 setting May 30, 1868, as Decoration Day, now known as Memorial Day; history of the Riverside Cemetery by Jerry Der Boghosian; and patriotic songs.

The service will take place rain or shine.

OXFORD — The Oxford Historical Society will hold its monthly meeting at 6 p.m. Friday, May 30, at the museum on Pleasant Street.

After a short business meeting, Ben Conant will give a program on the changing of the Oxford County seat from Paris Hill to South Paris.

Old South church plant sale May 31

FARMINGTON — Members and friends of Old South First Congregational Church will host a plant sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 31, to be held next door at the Holman Parish House, 227 Main St.

The sale will feature a variety of perennials, biennials, shrubs, herbs, houseplants, pots and other items associated with gardening. The sale will be held rain or shine. Proceeds will benefit the church’s outreach, community service and youth programs. For more information call 778-5948.

Campground Band dance at Jay VFW

JAY — A dance will be held from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday, May 31, at the VFW Hall, 64 Jewel St.

Music will be provided by the Campground Band.

Book, Bake, Bargain Sale at Mexico Library

MEXICO — The Mexico Public Library will hold a Book, Bake & Bargain Sale from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 31, in the area beside and behind the library and the Mexico Town Hall.

In addition to used hardcover and paperback books, both adult’s and children’s, there will be baked goods, VHS tapes and tables with yard sale items.

Spring bird walk at golf course

RANGELEY — Mingo Springs Golf Course has announced a spring bird walk, led by nature photographer Nick Leadley of Rangeley. This event is open to the public and all are welcome to enjoy a guided two-mile exploration of the Mingo Springs Trail & Bird Walk at 7 a.m. Saturday, May 31.

Participants will want to bring binoculars and cameras. Bird books are also useful. The walk will begin at the Mingo Springs Golf Course Maintenance Building, with parking available.

This is the season of bird migration and offers a wonderful opportunity to view and hear a variety of birds in an interesting natural setting. For more information, phone John Bicknell at 864-5656.

Waterford Fair dances start May 31

WATERFORD — The Waterford World’s Fair dances will begin with the first dance on Saturday , May 31, at the fairgrounds, 36 Green Road (across from Melby’s Markey) just off Route 35.

The band will be Cold Blue Steel, performing classic rock with everything from the ’70s on.

Cost is $10 per person. Dance is BYOB so only those over 21 years of age can attend.

Indoor rummage sale at YWCA

LEWISTON — The YWCA will hold a huge indoor rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 7, at 130 East Ave.

Donations of items are being accepted during regular business hours through June 6. Organizers request items that are in good condition, including jewelry, glassware, games, toys, puzzles, etc.
