BANGOR (AP) — University of Maine System trustees have released a draft strategic plan that would cut about $60 million through workforce and facility reductions over the next five and streamline academic programs to reduce overlap.

The plan approved Thursday is part of an effort to close a projected $69 million budget deficit by 2019.

Trustees Chairman Sam Collins tells the Portland Press Herald that the plan is necessary “in order to be sustainable.”

The long-range plan comes just days after trustees approved a $529 million budget for the upcoming fiscal year that included the elimination of more than 150 jobs across the seven campus system.

Rebecca Wyke, vice chancellor for finance and administration, said deficit projections assume that the system can increase tuition slightly and get a slight increase in state funding.
