PERU — At Monday night’s selectmen meeting, residents were reminded of public hearings on the town warrant and the school budget next week.
Town Clerk Vera Parent said a hearing on the warrant is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, in the old Peru Elementary School. There are 29 articles to vote on. If all are passed, the municipal budget will be $958,356.20.
Article 11 asks voters to raise $65,000 to begin reconstruction of the East Shore Road. The project is expected to take five years. Article 13 asks voters to raise $55,000 for a new highway truck and authorize financing up to $55,000 for the rest.
Article 22 asks if voters wish to have the position of selectmen’s secretary be appointed, as it used to be, rather elected.
Seeking two seats on the Board of Selectmen are incumbent Lee Merrill, Windy Henderson and former Selectman Tim Holland.
Also at Monday’s meeting, selectmen’s secretary Angela Barkhouse said public hearing on the proposed RSU 10 budget will be held at 6:30 p.m. May 29 at Dirigo High School in Dixfield. A vote on it will be held at 6:30 p.m. June 3, also at the school.
Several people have expressed interest in removing trees from the Town Office property and the board agreed that whoever gets the work is responsible for cleaning up the debris.
Code Enforcement Officer Jack Plumley inspected the trees and approved removal of all but two.
The committee planning the Peru Summer Fest has been given the funds from the Summer Fest account.
Selectman Danny Wing will take the health officer course offered by the state and will assume the duties of that town office.
Selectmen discussed the need to repair a storage building on the Town Office site. Selectman Lee Merrill, who owns a construction business, offered to supply the labor if the town buys the materials.
