AUBURN — NAMI Maine, National Alliance on Mental Illness, will host a a free Suicide Prevention Awareness Night on Thursday, May 1, in Auburn at the Hilton Garden Inn.
The training is being sponsored by Tri-Country Mental Health Services, Healthy Androscoggin, Lewiston public schools and the Auburn School Department.
The presentation is intended to develop suicide prevention awareness in a general audience and will provide general and basic information on suicide with resources available for further training, including materials produced by the Maine Suicide Prevention Program and NAMI Maine.
Parents, school staff, businesses, community organizations and the public are welcome.
Heather Carter, MA, suicide prevention senior trainer for NAMI Maine, will cover beliefs about suicide, how to talk about suicide, the facts, warning signs and risk factors, basic intervention skills to use with suicidal behavior, resources for help and the aftermath of suicidal behavior.
Carter comes to NAMI Maine from Washington State where she developed and ran an award-winning program focused on youth suicide prevention in high risk populations.
