ROCKLAND — A Bridgton woman remains at the Knox County Jail accused of trying to smuggle drugs to a Maine State Prison inmate by hiding Suboxone strips inside a Christmas card.

Jennifer Grenier, 28, was arrested and charged with trafficking in prison contraband.

According to an affidavit filed by Maine Department of Corrections investigator Jason Benefield, Grenier’s name had come up during an investigation into possible smuggling of drugs to an inmate at the prison last year. She and that prisoner had a falling out, however, and later her name came up in connection with a second inmate.

Telephone calls were monitored which led investigators to intercept a Christmas card she mailed to that second prisoner, according to the affidavit. One side of the card had been sliced open and Suboxone strips inserted in it and then resealed, according to the affidavit.

Judge Susan Sparaco set bail at $500 cash during Grenier’s initial appearance Wednesday afternoon in Rockland District Court. Assistant District Attorney Christopher Fernald said bail may be moot since he believes there was a federal probation hold on Grenier.

Grenier was convicted in 2012 in U.S. District Court in Portland of making a false statement when purchasing a firearm from a licensed dealer in 2007. She purchased the gun for her boyfriend who was barred from purchasing one, according to court records. She was sentenced in 2012 to three months in prison and three years of supervised release.
