PORTLAND/AUBURN — Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine’s Alumni Association will celebrate its 85th annual Patriots Day 5-Miler at noon Monday, April 21.
For 2014, the race moved back to Monday from Sunday since the day before is Easter Sunday. In addition to supporting college scholarships for deserving seniors associated with the clubs, this year on the same day as the Boston Marathon, at least $1,000 of proceeds will benefit The One Fund in Boston to honor all those affected by the 2013 Boston Marathon tragedy.
As a close second to the Boston Marathon, the Patriots Day 5-Miler may be the longest standing race in New England.
More than 400 runners come out to run the five-mile loop from the Portland Boys & Girls Club around Baxter Boulevard, on Patriots Day weekend.
A Kids’ Fun Run is held at 11 a.m. each year. And anyone under age 18 who runs the five-miler receives a free one-year membership to Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine; locations include Portland, South Portland and Auburn.
