DIXFIELD — Nearly three weeks after a fire destroyed a hair salon on Weld Street, the Office of the State Fire Marshal said the cause may not be known due to the extensive damage.

Six fire departments responded to the Feb. 28 fire at 41 Weld St., which housed a hair and tanning salon called The Cutter’s House.

The building was owned by Charlotte and Daniel Louvat.

Dixfield fire Chief Scott Dennent said Monday that state fire investigator Dan Young said he was able to determine that the fire began near the back of the hair salon but damage made it difficult to figure out what caused it.

“He said that we may never find out, though he’s still looking into it,” Dennent said.

The fire quickly spread from the back of the house to the top floor, he said, and to the building next door. though firefighters were able to quickly extinguish it.
