EUSTIS — It took half an hour for about 35 residents to approve a budget of $1 million at Saturday’s town meeting.
“It was quick,” Selectman Jay Wyman said early Saturday evening. “Basically, everything went very well. Everything was approved and there was very little discussion.”
The warrant included 22 articles, some of which increased the budget by $44,343 over last year, according to Town Assessor Sandra Scribner.
Wyman won re-election to another three-year term, as did Planning Board member Scott Thatcher.
Elected to the Flagstaff Regional School Board were Sarah Strunk for a three-year term, Jeff Brickley for a two-year term and David Richards for a one-year term, Wyman said. The terms start in June.
Wyman said state Sen. Tom Saviello, R-Wilton, surprised Eustis Code Enforcement Officer Peter Farnsworth at the meeting with a legislative sentiment, recognizing him for his 25 years of service with the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol. Farnsworth has retired from that, but not from code enforcement, Wyman said.
“Peter and I are good friends,” Saviello said early Saturday evening in Wilton. “We have known each other for 40 years. Peter was one of my forestry students at the University of Maine at Orono. This was my opportunity to say thank you to Peter for his Border Patrol service.”
Residents increased the Fire Department’s equipment reserve account from the $15,000 appropriated last year to $25,000, and approved the department’s budget of $80,000.
They also increased the summer road budget from $116,000 last year to $127,000 this year, and approved a winter road budget of $110,000.
Voters decided to authorize selectmen to use amounts from state revenue-sharing, excise taxes, a TransCanada donation and other items to reduce the 2014 tax commitment by $339,123.
Additionally, they approved appropriating $275,000 from undesignated revenue to reduce the commitment.
