MADAWASKA — Maine’s newest millionaires are choosing to remain anonymous, for now, according to the manager of the store where Wednesday’s winning $3 million Tri-State Megabucks lottery ticket was bought.

“They are very nice people and good customers,” Susan Williams, manager at Bob’s Neighborhood Store in Madawaska, said Thursday afternoon. “I am very excited for them.”

The ticket with the winning numbers 4, 11, 17, 18, 28 and 2 was purchased sometime Wednesday afternoon said Williams, adding that the family has asked her not to reveal their identity.

“They found out [Wednesday] night that they won,” Williams said. “They were in here this morning [and] were really happy giving us big hugs.”

Williams described the family as “very deserving” and regular purchasers of Megabucks tickets.

“They have asked us to keep their names secret, and we are respecting that,” Williams said. “They need some time to take it all in.”

That request for anonymity has not stopped speculation around the northern Maine mill town.

“People are asking me and trying to get the names,” Williams said with a laugh.

Over at Modern Touch Hair Salon, the identity of the town’s lucky family was a hot topic on Thursday.

“We are all just waiting to see who it is,” Sara Lagasse, Modern Touch stylist, said Thursday. “I can tell you it’s not me, because if it was, I don’t think I’d be here right now.”

As sellers of the winning ticket, Bob’s Neighborhood store will share in the winnings and receive $30,000 from the Maine Lottery Commission.

“We are going to put in some new gas pumps and maybe do some upgrades here at the store,” Williams said.

This is the second time lottery lightning has struck the Madawaska store.

In 1989, a resident purchased a winning $1.3 million ticket there, Williams said.
