Figure, Brunswick was the two-time defending champion, and other than an -early-season loss to KVAC Class B champion Morse, had rolled through the competition throughout the regular season.

Carrier was right on, but was thrilled to see his Blue Devils put on a thrilling performance at the Bath Area Family YMCA, setting four school records on the day. Carrier and his team were jumping with excitement during the meet-closing 400 freestyle relay, with Jakub Suransky, Alex Mills, Peter Tirabassi and Matthew Charest touching in 3:37.52.

“That was our fourth team record of the day, and was just a great day for Lewiston High School swimming,” Carrier said. “I couldn’t be prouder of the team and this is the best team that I have seen here since I have been coaching. You work them really hard, pound them into the ground for 14 weeks, rest them up and get them excited for the KVACs. Plus to have a couple superb early swims really pumped them up. It was great to see.”

Not surprisingly, the Brunswick boys piled up 344 points, with Lewiston picking up 267 to easily outdistance third-place finisher Messalonskee (164). Cony (142) and Mt. Ararat (140) rounded out the top five. Edward Little was sixth with 80 points.

In the girls’ meet, Brunswick made it a sweep with 367 points, with Messalonskee in second with 236 points. Cony was third (154) and Mt. Ararat fourth (142). In a back-and-forth battle all day, Lewiston edged the Red Eddies for fifth, 129-128, while Leavitt took seventh with 25 points.

The Blue Devils’ boys’ squad made its presence known early. The team of Eric Horton, Tirabassi, Charest and Suransky swam a 1:55.55 in the 200-yard medley relay for a school record. Lewiston was second in the event to Brunswick’s 1:42.81.

Both Charest and Tirabassi earned a pair of runner-up finishes individually. Charest was second in the 200 individual medley in 2:02.35, and second in the 100 backstroke in 57.39 (team record). Meanwhile, Tirabassi was in the runner-up spot in both the 200 butterfly (57.93) and 100 breaststroke (1:03.31, team record).

Alex Mills had a solid day, finishing third in the 200 freestyle (2:05.55) and 100 free (56.21). Suransky was fourth in the 100 free (56.75) and fifth in the 50 free (25.96), Sean Dyer took sixth in the 200 free (2:21.52) and Alexander Miles was sixth in the 100 butterfly (1:09.16).

“There were a lot of personal-best times that got dropped today, and the competition here is just really good and forces you to swim your best to challenge,” said Dyer.

In the 200 freestyle relay, the Lewiston foursome of Caleb Lebrun, Miles, Mills and Horton were also second, touching in 1:48.25.

Taylor Roy had the highest Lewiston finish among the girls, taking third in the 50 free in 28.95. She led a parade of fourth-place Blue Devil finishes, touching in 1:02.62 in the 100 free.

Elizabeth Small was fourth in the 100 butterfly (1:21.32), Jami Morissette fourth in the 50 free (29.02) and sixth in the 100 free (1:05.35), and the 200 freestyle relay and 400 free relays were also in fourth place. Swimming the 200 free relays were Blue Devils Morissette, Small, Kathrin Wall and Roy (2:03.06), while the 400 free relay squad was Morissette, Small, Carlotta Colibazzi and Roy (4:33.44).

The top finishes for the Red Eddies on the day were Olivia Paione and Maggie Chirayath.

Paione was second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.03 and third in the 200 IM in 2:15.96.

Chirayath was second in the 100 butterfly to Brunswick’s Caitlin Tycz, who demolished the KVAC record of 58.12, touching in 55.74. Chirayath was next in 1:12.76, and also managed a sixth-place showing in the 200 free (2:13.67).

In the relays, the 200 medley squad of Emma Paradie, Paione, Chirayath and Lily Russell were fourth in 2:10.36; the 400 freestyle team of Chirayath, Russell, Paradie and Paione took third in 4:21.18; and Darlene Gardner, Corryn Lachance, Tarren Gilberti and Mary Philbrick were sixth in the 200 free in 2:19.07.

For the EL boys, Michal Cwik took fourth in the both the 50 free (25.92) and 100 breaststroke (1:15.11).

The Red Eddies’ boys were fifth in the 200 free relay (Isaac Peachey, Anthony Blasi, Kameron Morin, Cooper Mowry, 2:12.56), fifth in the 400 free relay (Mowry, Morin, Blasi, Cwik, 4:40.70) and sixth in the 200 medley relay (Morin, Peachey, Cwik, Mowry, 2:26.21).

“We had some great swims and our kids did a really good job today,” said Edward Little coach Scott Morrison, who was named the KVAC Coach of the Year. “Olivia set another school record in the 100 breaststroke. All in all, just a great job and we are looking forward to the state meet. This is the last meet where kids can qualify for states, and this is just a great place, a great pool and a great environment.”

Kristen Morissette of Leavitt had a solid meet, taking second to Brunswick’s Emma Blair in the 100 backstroke in 1:08.32, and third in the 100 freestyle (1:01.95).
