DIXFIELD — A local man who tried to pass a loaded pulp truck in a no-passing zone on a Route 2 curve caused a four-vehicle accident late Friday afternoon, sending one man to the hospital, Dixfield police said on Saturday morning.
Lt. Jeff Howe said he will seek a criminal charge of driving to endanger from the District Attorney’s office against Douglas Kubesh, 47.
Howe said that at about 4:48 p.m. Friday, Kubesh was driving east in a 2009 Hyundai when he pulled out to pass a 1984 GMC pulp truck and other vehicles on a blind corner.
Kubesh sideswiped two westbound vehicles: a 2009 Volvo driven by Lawrence Parker, 45, of New Sharon, and a 1995 Dodge pickup truck driven by Melinda Given, 43, of Farmington, Howe said. The collisions happened right in the apex of the curve, he said.
Kubesh also struck the tires of the pulp truck. The Volvo and the Dodge collided after being sideswiped, Howe said. The pickup truck remained in the road while the Volvo and the Hyundai came to rest off the road on the eastbound shoulder.
Parker had to be extricated by Rumford firefighters using hydraulic equipment. He was taken by Med-Care Ambulance to Rumford Hospital with a nonlife-threatening injury that will require corrective surgery and a long rehabilitation, Howe said. Parker was treated and released later that night, he said.
The pulp truck driver was not injured. Becky Redlevske, 48, of New Sharon, a passenger in Parker’s car, complained of bumps, bruises and pain but was not taken to the hospital, Howe said.
The two cars and the pickup truck were demolished. Damage to the pulp truck was minimal.
