LITCHFIELD — On Nov. 11 William Bold American Legion Post 181 of Litchfield honored American veterans and America by gathering at the Post for four special presentations.

The post honored Staff Sgt. Kenneth Goodwin Nason, a WWII veteran killed in action, by refolding his burial flag and presenting it to his daughter, Carolyn Nason Goggin, and his son, Robert Nason. The flag was refolded by WWII veterans William Quackenbush and Malcolm Harvey, along with the assistance of Staff Sgt. Michael Boyce of the Maine Conservation Corp.

Following this ceremony the post honored the local Boy Scout Troop for their service to the post and the community by presenting appreciation certificates to each of the Scouts along with American Legion coins.

A new American flag was presented to the Libby-Tozier School to be flown at the school. The presentation was made by Post Americanism Officer Norman Bernier.

These presentations were followed by the ceremonial flag retirement service led by Post Commander Deborah Couture with the assistance of the Boy Scouts. The meaning of The Pledge of Allegiance was read by Bill Christopoulos, District Americanism Officer, and Norman Bernier, Post Americanism Officer, in preparation for disposing of worn out flags.

The ceremony was followed by the burning of hundreds of flags which were dropped off at the Post for honorable disposal. The people attending were reminded that there is a deposit box at the Post for worn out flags to be honorably disposed of.
