HARRINGTON — Maine State Police say that a standoff at a home on Sharon Lane has ended safely, with two men in police custody and a woman taken to the hospital for treatment of an illness.
Elliot Robinson, 60, and his father, Vernon Robinson, 78, surrendered to police and have been charged with criminal restraint in connection with the incident, according to Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the state Department of Public Safety. The Robinsons are accused of preventing the woman from getting medical treatment, and the younger Robinson allegedly threatened violence if state officials attempted to remove the woman from the house.
The men surrendered after talking for about six hours to state police negotiators, McCausland said, and were going to be taken to the Washington County Jail.
McCausland said members of the state police tactical team and negotiators were called to the home about noon.
During the standoff, a firetruck with the Harrington Fire Department blocked traffic on Route 1 at its intersection with Sacarap Road. Traffic off Route 1 was detoured onto Sacarap Road and North Street.
