MADISON (AP) — A central Maine snowmobile club that maintains part of a statewide trail system is no longer in danger of closing after an influx of new members.
The Abnaki Sno-Riders Snowmobile Club of Madison said earlier this month that a lack of members meant it was in danger of not being able to keep up maintenance of about 50 miles of trails, including a section of the highly-traveled Interconnected Trail System.
Outgoing club secretary Bonnie Moore told the Morning Sentinel (http://bit.ly/1gEAiMo ) more than 50 people showed up at this week’s meeting, about half of whom were new to the club. She says a typical meeting draws about 10 people.
Last year, snowmobiling generated about $350 million of economic activity in Maine, according to the Maine Tourism Association.
