JAY — The Community Garden at Spruce Mountain Middle School yielded nearly 80 pounds of vegetables that were donated to the Tri-Town Ministerial Association Food Cupboard.

Trevor Doiron, a freshman at Spruce Mountain High School, headed up the effort for the second year.

“We learned to set plants farther apart and plant cucumbers in hills,” he said.

This year’s crop included green peppers, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes and zucchini. Last year, the garden produced green beans, as well. Trevor hopes to plant some next year and plans to add two more beds to the garden.

Each Tuesday for the past few weeks, he took produce to the food pantry at Eaton Memorial United Methodist Church in Livermore Falls for distribution to those in need.

More than a dozen students and school staff members helped with the four raised-bed gardens.

One was Trevor’s friend, Lucas Alley, who is also a freshman.

“It’s really interesting to grow a garden,” said Alley, who said he grows one at home.

Trevor’s dad, Tom Doiron, also helped out. On Monday, the three of them were cleaning up the beds.

“I wasn’t much help this year,” Doiron said. “Trevor took care of everything.”

Trevor plans to head up the garden every year until he graduates, then go to college to study business.

He also recently joined the Leos, the youth group associated with the Jay-Livermore Falls Lions Club.
