MOLUNKUS — An unidentified man was killed when the vehicle he was driving veered off Aroostook Road and hit a utility pole, possibly while police were chasing him.

Medway Fire Chief Brian McLaughlin confirmed that the accident was a fatality. He said his department, Mattawamkeag Ambulance and Lincoln Ambulance were called about 8:30 p.m. When they arrived, Maine State Police told them that a man was dead, and to stand by.

A hunter from New Jersey vacationing in a cabin along the road said he and his friend were eating dinner when they saw a car driving by at a very high rate of speed.

About 500 yards behind the car was a police cruiser, its lights flashing, he said. “There was a decent amount of space between them. He [the police officer] was not pushing it.”

Within seconds of the cars passing, lights on the street flickered and went off before a campground generator restored electricity, the hunter said. Then ambulances and firefighters drove by.

A state trooper at the scene said investigators would be reconstructing the accident, and state police would have a statement within a few hours.

A van from Clay’s Funeral Home arrived at nearly 11 p.m.

Molunkus is a very small town in Aroostook County near the Penobscot County line and Medway.
