HOULTON — Maine State Police are investigating what they said Monday was the suicide early in the morning of an inmate at the Aroostook County Jail in Houlton.

Chief Deputy Darrell Crandall of the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Department said Monday afternoon that the 31-year-old male was found hanging in his cell by corrections officers at approximately 1:30 a.m. and was alone in the locked cell at the time.

Corrections officers worked to revive him at the jail before an ambulance was called.

He was subsequently taken to Houlton Regional Hospital by the Houlton Ambulance Department, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Crandall said that the inmate’s identity is not being released at this time, and the sheriff’s department will work with the Maine Department of Corrections to conduct an internal review of jail procedures, which is standard practice in situations like this.
