WATERVILLE (AP) — A Maine woman who allegedly abducted her two young children after losing custody to them is facing extradition after being arrested in South Carolina.
Waterville Police Chief Joseph Massey said 34-year-old BethMarie Retamozzo was arrested at a rest area along Interstate 95 in South Carolina at about 10:15 p.m. Saturday. Her children, 7-year-old Joslyn Retamozzo, 6-year-old Joel Retamozzo and a 2-year-old daughter, are safe and in the custody of South Carolina human services officials.
Waterville police obtained an arrest warrant for Retamozzo on Friday on two counts of felony criminal restraint by a parent after she allegedly took her two older children during a supervised visit on Thursday. Police said the children’s grandmother has court-ordered custody of them.
For the investigation, police notified law enforcement agencies along the Eastern Seaboard to be on the lookout for Retamozzo’s vehicle, Massey said, knowing that she might be heading to Florida based on cellphone records and other information that police gathered.
Maine police are working with South Carolina officials to have Retamozzo brought back to Maine to face charges, he said.
