FARMINGTON — A Jay man pleaded guilty Tuesday to stealing a gun, jewelry and a chain saw from a Wilton residence earlier this year.

Corey Shaw, 30, pleaded guilty to two counts of felony theft in Franklin County Superior Court.

He initially faced an additional felony charge of burglary but that was dismissed in a plea agreement.

Shaw entered into an agreement that defers sentencing for two years. Judge Susan Oram, acting in designation of a justice, told Shaw that he has agreed to do a lot of hard work during the next two years and wished him good luck in getting it done.

If he is successful, he will be able to withdraw his pleas and plead to lesser charges, she said. Shaw also must not possess or use illegal drugs or alcohol and must undergo substance abuse counseling.

Prior to the judge accepting the agreement, Assistant District Attorney James Andrews said if the case had gone to trial, testimony would be heard from a Wilton resident that she started noticing items missing from a residence, including a firearm and jewelry.

She would testify that she believed Shaw was either pawning them or trading them for drugs, Andrews said.

Wilton police Chief Heidi Wilcox would have testified that a number of items were found to have been pawned by Shaw. She would also testify that Shaw admitted to taking the items and pawning them to buy drugs, Andrews said
