AUBURN — With a month left for candidates to collect signatures and guarantee their spots on November’s municipal ballot, the city is still looking for Ward 1 and 3 council candidates.
So far, 17 people have taken out papers for seats on the City Council and School Committee. That includes the five City Council ward seats, the five School Committee ward seats, at-large seats for the City Council and School Committee and mayor.
So far, Mayor Jonathan LaBonte is the only person seeking that position. LaBonte has returned his nominations, guaranteeing his place on the ballot.
City Council incumbents from Ward 2 and Ward 5, Robert Hayes and Leroy Walker, took out nominations to seek new terms. Walker has returned his petition.
Ward 4 Councilor David Young has returned his nominations, but not for his current seat. Young is seeking one of two at-large seats on the council.
Also seeking an at-large seat are incumbent Belinda Gerry, John T. Spruill of 10 Aaron Dr., Ron Potvin of 82 Northern Ave., Levi Gervais of 46 4th St. and Adam R. Lee of 132 Main St.
Lee has also taken out a petition for the Ward 4 council seat. He can only run for one seat, and currently is the only person officially considering the Ward 4 seat.
Would-be candidates have until Aug. 22 to take out nominating papers and return them to the City Clerk’s Office.
Papers are available at the City Clerk’s Office in Auburn Hall. All 15 elected positions are up this November.
Candidates for mayor must collect at least 100 signatures from registered voters living anywhere in Auburn. Candidates for City Council or School Committee need 25 signatures — from anywhere in the city for at-large candidates or from within individual wards for ward candidates.
According to the City Charter, terms for Auburn’s elected officials begin 45 days after the election, which will be Dec. 20.
