SHAREcenter to hold yard sale

LEWISTON — SHAREcenter will have an indoor yard sale to help raise money for its annual budget from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday and Saturday, July 19 and 20, at the mill unit at 36 Chestnut St. which also houses the new Loft apartments and Museum LA. Big signs will direct shoppers.

SHAREcenter is a self funded organization with sites in Auburn and Topsham. Its mission is to provide educational supplies to more than 55 schools and about 30 nonprofit organizations in Androscoggin County.

SHAREcenter operates with reduce, reuse and recycle as key components. Local businesses and community members donate their unwanted inventory and household items and the center provides these items to its members for use in classrooms and their programs.

Woodcarving workshop set

NEW GLOUCESTER — Master-carver Norm Devonshire will teach a workshop from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 20, at Shaker Village, Route 26, 707 Shaker Road.

Devonshire will teach the basic techniques of woodcarving, including proper use of the knife, methods of cuts and sharpening. Participants will complete a classic carving of a Scottie dog. Materials provided. Fee is $25.

Auburn Vacation Bible School

AUBURN — The United Methodist Church of Auburn will host Everywhere Fun Fair, “Where God’s World Comes Together” Vacation Bible School from 8:30 to noon the week of July 22-26, for ages 4 through fourth grade.

Free nutrition walk and talk

LEWISTON — The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing will offer a free nutrition walk and talk for cancer patients, survivors and caregivers. The walks will take place Thursdays, July 25 through Aug. 15, from 7 to 8 a.m. Participants will meet at the Dempsey Center, 29 Lowell St. Join Dempsey Center dietitian Amanda D. Ettinger for a morning walk and bring nutrition questions. The walks will last approximately 30 minutes and return to the Dempsey Center for refreshments and a nutritious snack. This is a group support setting to discuss nutrition related topics. Come dressed in weather-appropriate clothing and comfortable walking shoes. If raining, a current nutrition topic will take place at the Dempsey Center.

Baked bean, casserole supper

GRAY — A baked bean and casserole supper will take place at 5 p.m. Saturday, July 27, at First Congregational Church, Route 115.

Salads, homemade breads and desserts will be included with the meal. Cost is $8 for adults and $4 for ages under 12.

Bean, ham supper is July 27

LISBON — The Methodist Women will host a home-baked bean and ham supper from 5 to 6 p.m. Saturday, July 27, at United Methodist Church, 14 School St.

Cost is $7 for adults, $3 for ages 6-12 and free for 5 and under.

Chair-weaving workshop 

NEW GLOUCESTER — Learn to weave a classic “checkerboard” Shaker-style chair seat or stool seat using the same methods passed down by the Shakers since the 1800s during a workshop that will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 27, at Shaker Village, Route 26, 707 Shaker Road.

Antique and contemporary examples of Shaker chairs and Shaker chairs seats will be examined. Participants need to bring a new or antique chair or footstool to reseat. Materials list supplied upon registration. Fee is $35.

Mediterranean Diet workshop

LEWISTON — The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing will offer a free Mediterranean Diet workshop for prostate cancer patients, survivors and caregivers. “Prostate Cancer Support Group – The Mediterranean Diet: Supporting the Health and Well-being of Cancer Survivors” will take place from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 31, at the Dempsey Center, 29 Lowell St.

The traditional Mediterranean diet pattern has a well-established beneficial role in overall health, including the prevention of heart disease and certain types of cancer. Oncology Dietitian Amanda Ettinger will share how to apply this eating plan to your own life as you recover from prostate cancer.

Dickens club reads ‘Curiosity’

AUBURN — The Pickwick Club, Maine’s Dickens discussion group, will meet at the Auburn Library fro 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 24.
