FARMINGTON — Police received a report Tuesday of someone being on the Farmington Public Library roof the evening of July 4 and throwing fireworks from it.

The complaint came through library Director Melanie Coombs, who learned about it from another person, police Secretary Bonnie Pomeroy said.

If people see someone on the roof, they should call police at 778-6311 immediately so police have a chance of catching the person, she said.

“We have had probably 10 incidents in two to three years that there is evidence” of people being on the roof, Coombs said.

One of the library’s regular patrons notified her of firecrackers being thrown from the roof on July 2. The patron was walking by and children were throwing firecrackers down, she said.

“They were definitely bigger than firecrackers,” Coombs said. They looked like cherry bombs, she said.

There was also a paver-type stone from the roof that was pulled out and thrown into the shrubs, she said.

The slate on part of the library’s roof is very fragile and not made for walking, Coombs said. It was replaced in 2007, and it would be extremely expensive to replace again, she said.

There was also evidence of people drinking alcohol, she said.

“We don’t want people on our roof,” she said. “Most importantly, we don’t want people getting hurt.”

Farmington police have checked out each incident, she said.
