ROXBURY — A Rumford woman suffered head and body injuries when she was thrown from her all-terrain vehicle on Friday while descending the Mine Notch Trail, officials said.

Tammy Munzner, 42, was being treated at Rumford Hospital, Maine Warden Kris MacCabe said early Friday evening.

“She had pretty substantial facial injuries on the left side of her face, and her left eye was swollen shut,” MacCabe said. “She’s in a lot of pain. Her face (is so swollen) that she looks like a chipmunk storing nuts.”

She may have broken her nose, MacCabe said. “(She was) bleeding pretty profusely from her nose.”

He said Munzner wasn’t wearing a helmet when the accident occurred at about 1:20 p.m. roughly half a mile in on the Mine Notch Trail off Old County Road.

He said Munzner was riding a 2006 Arctic Cat 400 four-wheeler with Shelly Lord, also of Rumford, who was riding her own all-terrain vehicle.

Both women are seasonal residents at the Silver Lake Campground in Roxbury and had decided to take their ATVs on a short loop trail to see how Lord’s recently repaired ATV ran, MacCabe said.

He said Munzner had only been riding ATVs for two years and neither of the riders wore helmets, but both told him they’re definitely getting helmets now.

“Mine Notch Trail is a pretty bony trail and some ATVs have power steering and can handle it better, but (Munzner’s ATV) doesn’t have power steering,” he said. “So when you hit a rock, it just jolts you to the side.”

MacCabe said he believes that a wheel on Munzner’s ATV hit an exposed rock and she wasn’t prepared for it. He said she was thrown face first onto the rocky, hard-packed gravel trail and lost consciousness for a short while.
