WALES — To save money, school directors are weighing whether to cut 10 teachers from next year’s budget.

Superintendent Jim Hodgkin gave RSU 4 directors a list of $605,000 in proposed cuts at Wednesday night’s meeting. After discussion in executive session, board members opted to restore two positions, he said.

Included in the remaining $485,000 in proposed cuts:

* 10 teachers, district-wide

* Boy’s high school tennis

* Seventh grade sports

Boy’s tennis didn’t have enough interest to form a team this year, Hodgkin said.

For the seventh graders, he’s proposed merging seventh and eighth grade sports. Seventh graders also have the option of participating in local recreation programs offered by the three towns, Hodgkin said.

The 10 positions will be identified at a budget workshop meeting Wednesday, April 3, at 6:30 p.m. at Oak Hill Middle School.

Teachers will be notified in the next week if they may be on that list.

With no money to roll over from the current year’s budget and an anticipated $600,000 drop in state revenue, Hodgkin and directors have been looking for places to cut to avoid steep property increases.
