MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — Middlebury College improved to 5-0 for the first time since 1992 with a 38-23 win over the Bates College football team on Saturday at Alumni Stadium.
Middlebury wide receiver Zach Driscoll finished the game with 15 catches for 203 yards and a pair of touchdowns, becoming the school’s all-time receptions leader with 143.
Bates scored on its opening possession, driving 66 yards on 11 plays after a 29-yard kick-off return from junior Shawn Doherty. Senior quarterback Trevor Smith had a 14-yard rush on the drive before scoring from seven yards out. Middlebury answered two possessions later with a 35-yard scoring strike from McCallum Foote to Driscoll.
Colby 28, Hamilton 29
WATERVILLE — Colby’s Jonathan Michaeles will likely never forget his first win as a head coach after the Mules scored 19 straight points in the final 8:15 of the contest to pull out a 32-29 victory against Hamilton at Harold Alfond Stadium on Saturday.
While the Mules’ offense came alive in the fourth quarter, Colby’s defense did the job at the end of the third quarter. Hamilton had first down at the Mule 1-yard line and was threatening to extend their 26-13 lead. Colby’s Henry Nelson and his teammates had other ideas. Nelson had one solo stop and assisted on two other tackles to force the Continentals’ Garrett Hoy to kick a 20-yard field goal with 11 seconds left.
Trinity 27, Bowdoin 10
BRUNSWICK — The Trinity football team took advantage of five Bowdoin turnovers and scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to pull away for a 27-10 win at Whittier Field on Saturday.
Evan Bunker rushed for 136 yards and two scores in the victory for the Bantams (5-0). The loss spoiled a 143-yard, one-touchdown effort by Zach Donnarumma for the Polar Bears (1-4).
Women’s soccer
Eastern Connecticut 4, USM 1
GORHAM — Senior Kelly Wallace had three assists to help Eastern Connecticut defeat the University of Southern Maine Huskies, 4-1, in a women’s soccer match Saturday.
Wallace had a hand in the first three Warrior goals. She set up senior Chelsea Downeremy in the 15th minute for a 1-0 Warrior lead.
Southern Maine sophomore Mariah Cropley scored the lone goal for the home side knocking in a corner kick taken by freshman Brooke Lawrence of Lisbon Falls. Senior Katie Cobb of Lewiston made five stops for the Huskies.
Middlebury 3, Bates 0
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — Middlebury head coach Peter Kim became the first women’s soccer coach in school history to earn 100 wins as the No. 17 nationally ranked Panthers topped Bates 3-0 on Saturday.
With the win, the Panthers (11-1-1, 7-1-1) have locked up a NESCAC Quarterfinal home game on October 27th,
Bates (4-8-1, 1-7-1) junior goalkeeper Anabel Schmelz finished with five saves in the game. Sophomore Dakota Donovan, sophomore Nicki Brill, junior Jaimie Cappucci, sophomore Krista Prouty and first-year Maggie Coco (Avon, Conn.) all put shots on goal for the Bobcats.
Men’s soccer
Bates 2, Middlebury 0
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — Although each time has qualified as an upset, the Bates men’s soccer team came away the winner in its third consecutive trip to Middlebury on Saturday, prevailing 2-0 on the strength of excellent defense and another two goals by senior captain John Murphy.
Murphy snared the lead for the Bobcats with a free kick at the 52:05 mark from the right side. The shot was a low curving blast that skipped once and found its way into the back of the net

Middlebury 12, Bates 0
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — The Bates field hockey team couldn’t stand in the way of another win for No. 1 nationally ranked Middlebury on Saturday, as the Panthers clinched the top seed for the upcoming NESCAC Championship with a 12-0 win on Kohn Field.
