Up in his blacksmith shop on the Clay Bank Stepehn H. Lovejoy of Auburn has a regular museum of paraphernalia connected with the race track. A Journal reporter stepped in the other morning and asked Steve to limber up and let himself loose. Hanging on the wall of his shop is a diploma given by the Androscoggin Horticultural Society with the date of 1878. In the centre is the statement that first prize for hand-made horseshoes and axes had been awarded to L.R. Lovejoy and Son. Steve was the son. The shop now occupied by Mr. Lovejoy originally stood on the spot where the Auburn post office now stands. When the hill was removed the shop had to move also, and it was taken up to its present position in 1876. It was Mr. Lovejoy who made the shoes for the famous 17-months-old colt, Wilbur Lou, that won the world’s record for that age in a race at Phoenix, Arizona, Nov. 11, 1910.

Last night’s flash rainstorm which left its mark on the Twin Cities, took a heavy toll in the basement of the Androscoggin County building, housing the county’s civil defense headquarters. CD Director Normand J. Vermette said the flash storm apparently flooded the city’s sewer system, and, as a result, water poured into the county building basement through floor drains and toilets. Parts of the basement were under one foot of water.

Several exhibits connected with skiers of Lewiston-Auburn are located at the New England Ski Museum at Franconia, N.H. Displayed there are skis on which championships were won, such as those worn by Auburn native John Bower when he won the National Junior Cross Country Championship in 1958 at Winter Park, Colo. Bower is the only American skier to win the Nordic Combined event at the Holmenkollen Ski Festival at Oslo, Norway. There’s also the silver cup won by his sister Sandy when she captured the National Junior Giant Slalom title, and a plaque presented to Bob Kendall of Auburn in recognition of his being named to the U.S. Olympic Team.
