This is in response to Charles MacDonald’s sarcastic reply (July 16) to Thomas Shields’ letter (July 2).

I find MacDonald’s argument that the liberal media networks are a response to Fox network to be totally fallacious. Fox is one of the newcomers on the block. It came into existence long after the major networks were firmly established. You can’t be an alternative to something that doesn’t exist.

The most upsetting part of MacDonald’s letter was his use of generalizations to imply that anyone who has been married more than once is somehow unfit to give an opinion on marriage. Does that mean that a victim of domestic abuse who flees a marriage to save her life is somehow also unqualified to give an opinion?

Another incorrect generalization is that “Democrats have all the young people.” Nothing could be further from the truth.

I was a delegate at this year’s Republican caucus and I can honestly say there were many Republicans under the age of 40 at that caucus. Last spring, I also attended two major Republican rallies that drew hundreds of attendees of all ages.

In fact, an event at the University of Maine had an attendance some estimated to be well over a thousand students. That rally’s attendance dwarfed the attendance President Obama got when he visited.

The Republican Party is alive and thriving. People are waking up to the realization that this nation cannot survive another four years of Democratic Party governance.
