NAPLES, Maine (AP) — The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department in Maine says a driver fleeing the scene of a crash collided with another vehicle a mile down the road, causing life-threatening injuries to himself and another motorist.

Investigators say 21-year-old Shane Faulkingham of Woburn, Mass., fled the scene of a crash Friday evening in Harrison and made it only a mile before a head-on collision in Naples.

Officials say Faulkingham, his passenger and the other motorist, 55-year-old Catherine Carter of Harrison, had to be extricated from their vehicles.

A LifeFlight helicopter took Carter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, and later a helicopter was summoned to transfer Faulkingham from a smaller hospital to CMMC. Investigators say the crashes remained under investigation but that speed and alcohol appear to be factors.
