Historical Society meeting

DIXFIELD — The Dixfield Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 10, at the museum house. Topics of discussion will be the Maine Memory Network Project and further discoveries in the group’s vast collection of scrapbooks and ephemera.

The Maine Memory Network Project encompasses the River Valley historical societies, libraries and in conjunction with RSU 10 students to foster local history interest and projects.

Business meeting will be included and light refreshments served. The public is encouraged to attend.

Stephens High Class of 1961

RUMFORD — Stephens High School Class of 1961 will hold a cook out at 11 a.m. Friday, May 11, at the home of Frank and Cheryl Anastasio, 707 Crescent Ave. For more information, call 364-3743.

Craft fair, lawn sale

RUMFORD — The Anything Goes spring craft fair and indoor lawn sale will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 12, at Hope Association, 85 Lincoln Ave.

There will be children’s games, raffles, Chinese auction, jewelry, a cookie walk, face painting, crafts and food. There will also be photos for Mother’s Day, while supply lasts.

The Briar Patch will offer children 12 and under a free potted or planted flower for mom, while supplies last, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The What Not Shop Thrift Store will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. offering clothing for $5 a bag.

Lunch of salami Italians and chips will be served. There will also be a car wash, weather permitting. For more information, call 364-4561.

Mother’s Day service, brunch

RUMFORD — The Rumford Lodge of Elks 862 will hold a special service honoring all mothers on Sunday, May 13, in their lodge room.

The service will take place at 11 a.m. followed by a brunch. All mothers eat for free while all others pay $3. Bring your mother out or honor mothers who are no longer able to join us.

Attendees do not need to be a member. Children will be able to select a potted flower to present to their mothers at the conclusion of the service. For more information, contact Exalted Ruler Ann White at 364-7081.

River Riders meeting

ANDOVER — Ellis River Riders will have a general membership meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, May 14, at the Andover Congregational Church. All members are welcome and encouraged to attend. Everyone’s input is appreciated to get the show season off to a good start.

Sportsmans Club supper

DIXFIELD — The Webb River Sportsmans Club will have their final supper of the season on Monday, May 14, at the club house on the Canton Point Road. Supper is at 6:30, meeting at 7 p.m. Women and new members are welcome.

‘Mud Season Movies’

BETHEL — Beginning on Wednesday, May 16, at 2 p.m., and thereafter on every other Wednesday through June 27, the Bethel Historical Society will present a series of free films on a variety of subjects, including farming, fishing, logging and lumbering.

These “Mud Season Movies,” lasting about one hour, will be shown in the Robert Chadbourne, Jr., Room at the Society’s Robinson House, 10 Broad St. They will be introduced by Bethel Historical Society trustee Dick Hale, retired University of Maine forestry professor, or a BHS staff member.

One of the first films to be featured will be the recently released “In The Blood: Uncovering the Life, Skills & Character of the Turn of the Century Maine Lumbermen and River Drivers.” Produced in 2011, this film illustrates and celebrates these individuals — their character, ethics and history — with stunning photography, vintage film footage, interviews and a compelling soundtrack.

Historical groups show movie

MEXICO — The Rumford Historical Society, in conjunction with the Mexico Historical Society, will offer the opportunity to residents of both towns and other interested persons from the region to view the DVD, “Gone… The Mystery of the Don Disaster,” which was shown on PBS on April 12 and 14.

The program will be held at the Mexico Rec Center, 15 Recreation Drive, at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 17. The one-hour long DVD was produced by Marilyn Taylor and David Wilkinson of Harpswell, based on the book by Stacy L. Welner, “Tragedy in Casco Bay.”

Musician Jimmy Gallant, formerly of Mexico, provided the lyrics in the sound track. Much of the research done for the DVD was provided by the Mexico and Rumford Historical Societies. The Memorial Stone in the Mexico Park across from the Veterans Bridge was precipitated by the research done for the DVD.

Prior to the presentation, the Rumford Historical Society’s will hold a brief annual meeting of the members to elect its officers and board of directors for 2012-13.

Following the meeting, light refreshments will be served.

MVHS blood drive

RUMFORD — On Friday, May 18, Mountain Valley High Student Council will sponsor a Red Cross Blood drive at Puiia Gymnasium. The drive will be from 8:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. Members of the community who would like to donate are strongly urged to make an appointment by going to www.redcrossblood.org or by calling 1-800-733-2767.

Legion barbecue May 19

DIXFIELD — A chicken barbecue will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 19, at the American Legion Post 100 Hall, 23 Main St.

Raffles and a 50/50 will be drawn. Bring your own beverage.
