NAPLES — A local man was listed in critical condition at a Portland hospital Friday night, a day after his truck went off Route 302, rolled over and he was thrown out.

Henry Brown, 63, was being treated at Maine Medical Center, where a nursing supervisor said his condition was critical.

Brown was driving east near the Bridgton town line at 7:10 p.m. Thursday when he attempted to pass a tractor-trailer, Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department Capt. Don Goulet said in a statement. Brown, facing an oncoming vehicle, swerved his 2006 Chevrolet pickup truck into the westbound breakdown lane to avoid hitting it, Goulet said.

The truck went off the highway, struck a tree and rolled over, throwing Brown into the road, Goulet said. He suffered serious head and internal injuries, the captain said. He was not wearing a seat belt.

He was taken to Bridgton Hospital and later moved to Maine Medical Center.

Speed and improper passing are factors in the crash, which remains under investigation, Goulet said.
