LEWISTON – The Greater Androscoggin Humane Society will participate in World Spay Day on Tuesday, Feb. 28, when Dr. Stephen Kinney hosts his fifth World Spay Day at the shelter.

World Spay Day  is an international campaign of The Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International, to promote the life-saving benefits of spay/neuter. This year marks the 17th annual Spay Day and the shelter staff invite the community to stop by and join them in honoring Spay Day 2012 with refreshments and prizes.

The shelter will sponsor Kinney’s low-income spay/neuter clinic; qualifying individuals can register to have their cat spay/neutered and vaccinated for rabies for free on Feb. 28. Space is limited to 20 female and 25 male cats and reservations are highly recommended by calling 783-2311.

For those low-income pet owners whose cats and kittens are in need of spaying but are unable to reserve a spot in the clinic, the shelter invites them to call to learn about how their cat/kitten may qualify for the spay/neuter procedure and a rabies vaccination for a $10 co-pay.

Since Spay Day’s inception in 1995, it is conservatively estimated that participants have spayed or neutered more than one million animals. The number of homeless cats and dogs euthanized in the U.S. has fallen from approximately 13.5 million in 1973 to fewer than four million currently.
