100 years ago, 1912

The Farmington Normal School is the largest school for training teachers in the State. It now has 235 students, who spend an amount estimated at $1000 in town each week. The students carry on a model school, which teaches 150 of the boys and girls in the town at a total cost to the community of $200 a year.

50 years ago, 1962

Lewiston has been selected as one of the sites for an ice cream shop under the expansion plan of the Deering Ice Cream concern at Portland.

A new corporation, Deering Ice Cream Stores, has been set up to handle the new expansion and Mrs. Charles E. Stickney Jr. of Portland, the president, has announced plans to establish stores in Lewiston, Rockland, Waterville, Augusta and Belfast in addition to those at Portland and South Portland.

25 years ago, 1987

WCBB-TV’s locally produced Maine Magazine has been selected as a finalist for the 1986 Iris Awards, given annually by the National Association of Television Program Executives for outstanding locally produced television programming.

WCBB is the only Maine television station to be nominated for this award.
