LEWISTON — For Charles Turgeon, his years as Buckley Street resident make him a better choice for the Ward 4 City Council seat than the woman on the ballot.

Turgeon said he doesn’t have anything against Doreen Christ, the sole name that will appear on the Ward 4 Council ballot next week.

“I’ve lived in this neighborhood for 40 years,” said Turgeon, 56, of 43 Buckley St. “I can represent what this neighborhood needs.”

He’s hoping residents will add his name to the ballot, then fill the arrow to vote for him.

“I know I’m just a write-in candidate, but I’ve been working really hard at this,” Turgeon said. “I’ve been knocking on doors, meeting people and telling them how I am.”

He’s one of five Lewiston residents hoping to win next Tuesday, despite not having their names on he ballot.

Three candidates — Zam Zam Mohamud, of 6 Tall Pines, Abdullahi M. Abdulle, of 37 Spruce, and Robert V. Connors, of 23 Charles St. — are running for the open School Committee member at-large seat.

Charles A. Soule, of 135 Bartlett St. is hoping residents will skip the five Lewiston Mayoral candidates and write in his name and address.

Write-in rules require anyone hoping to cast a vote for someone not printed on the ballot must right in the candidates name and address, and then fill in the space to cast the vote.

“By filling in that arrow, they actually cast their vote,” said City Clerk Kathy Montejo. “Otherwise, they’ve just written a name on the ballot.”

In Auburn, Deputy City Clerk Susan Clements-Dallaire said that no candidates have registered with her department as write-ins.

Two have contacted the Sun Journal, saying they are seeking the seat.

Tim Doughty, of 75 Cherry Vale Circle,  is hoping to claim Auburn’s Ward 4 City Council seat through a write-in campaign. Incumbent Councilor David Young is the only candidate on the ballot for that seat.

In Ward 3, Jessica Larlee of 15 Willow St. has declared herself a write-in candidates for that seat. The only candidate on that ballot is Mary LaFontaine of 113 Western Ave.
