Smithfield meeting

LITCHFIELD — The Smithfield Plantation Board of Trustees meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28, at the Litchfield Town Office.

Irish merchants

LEWISTON — John Henderson will deliver a lecture titled, “Androscoggin Irish: Merchants & Businessmen,” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29, in the Lewiston Public Library’s Callahan Hall.

This is the fifth and final presentation in a five-part series on the historic Irish-American community in Lewiston/ Auburn.

Henderson will identify Irish and Irish-American businessmen on Lisbon and Main streets, along with the buildings they constructed and occupied.

Henderson is the author of the recently-published book, “Androscoggin Irish.” Copies of John’s book will be available for sale and signing following his presentation.

LEWISTON — The Lewiston Senior Citizens Cribbage League winners at the Multi-Purpose Center on Sept. 22 were:

Knit-Wits return

LEWISTON — The Knit-Wits are back again at the YWCA. Every Friday morning from 9:30 to 11 a.m., the Knit-Wits meet at the YWCA to knit (or other hand work), share stories, catch up on the week’s news and even talk sports (Patriot’s football, of course).

Members honored

AUBURN — The Alden M. Gayton American Legion Ladies Auxiliary had a Ladies’ Tea to recognize this year’s officers and to recognize members for their years of service. Among the members recognized were Colleen Starbird (eight years), Heidi Bernier (26 years), Connie Day (31 years), Jeanne Starkey (32 years) and the third-longest member of the auxiliary, Patricia Marshall, a member of 66 years.

LEWISTON — The Greater Androscoggin Humane Society is accepting registration for an upcoming obedience class with Marie Gagnon from the Lazy L Kennel.

The seven-week course is available to puppies eight weeks and older. Dogs in this class will learn the basics of canine etiquette. In addition to canine manners, commands such as Sit, Down, Stay and Come and how to follow off leash will be covered in this class.

The first class begins at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, at the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society, 55 Strawberry Ave. The fee is $110; for those who adopted a puppy from the Humane Society, the fee will be $80. Puppies should be up to date on puppy vaccines. Register by calling the shelter at 783-2311.

Scout open house

LEWISTON — Boy Scouts Troop 116 will hold an open house from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, at Holy Cross Hall for boys ages 12 to 17.

Senior meeting

SABATTUS — The Seniors meeting will be held Thursday, Oct. 6, at the Maxwell Hall. Doors open at 11 a.m. The meal is still a surprise even for the cook. Those who haven’t signed up should call Doris at 784-7950.

The meeting will be held after the meal. This month is also election of officers; nominations will be accepted from the floor.
