Betty Ellis emptied her half-full cellar of books Saturday.

She didn’t take them to the dump or to a local library. She had them loaded into a truck for a journey to Africa via Baltimore.

The books, most of them textbooks, are on their way to Liberia, a country founded by freed American slaves on the west coast of Africa.

Mrs. Ellis, who lives in Bowdoin, collected the books from schools in Lisbon, Durham, Freeport, Jay, Skowhegan, Bowdoin and other towns. When they arrive in Liberia, Peace Corps volunteers will sort them out and deliver them to elementary schools throughout the country.
