VFW meeting

LEWISTON — The Longley-Dionne VFW Post 9150 will hold their monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, at the Multi-Purpose Center. All officers and members are encouraged to attend.

Agenda will include upcoming events, poppy sales fundraiser and recruiting new veterans eligible to join the VFW. Post due are $22 per year. Those wishing to join should bring a copy of their DD214 for eligibility.

No compass meeting

AUBURN — The September Meeting of the Androscoggin Valley Square & Compass Club will not meet this month at the Auburn Masonic Hall. The next meeting will be Thursday, Oct. 27.

Book talk, signing

LEWISTON — The Lewiston Public Library will host a book talk and signing event featuring the authors and editors of the publication, “Somalis in Maine: Crossing Cultural Currents” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22. The free public program will take place in Callahan Hall on the third floor of the library.

Two of the editors, Mazie Hough and Carol Toner, will talk about their work on the project. Also speaking will be one of the authors, Lewiston Deputy City Administrator Phil Nadeau, who penned the chapter on Lewiston’s response to the rapid influx of refugees.

Blood drive

GREENE — The Greene Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary will sponsor a Red Cross blood drive from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, at the fire station on the Patton Road.

Pizza, homemade desserts and chicken soup will be served to all donors.

Apple Saturdays

NEW GLOUCESTER — As part of the first Apple Saturdays, the annual New Gloucester Apple Pie Sale will be held on Saturday, Sept. 24, beginning at 10 a.m. at the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village, Route 26. Apples come from New Gloucester’s Thompson’s Orchard and the pies are prepared and baked by New Gloucester cooks. To pre-order pies call Chair Avis Ford at 926-4561. The sale is sponsored by the members and friends of the New Gloucester Historical Society.

There will be free cider pressing; bring your own apples or buy Shaker Orchard apples.

NEW GLOUCESTER — The Classic Quilters will hold a demonstration of their skills beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, at the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village, Route 26. Free and open to the public.

Golf scramble

POLAND — The Edward Little Music Association will sponsor a Golf Scramble on Sunday, Oct. 16, at Fairlawn Golf and Country Club. Proceeds will benefit the scholarship fund.

The cost is $50 per person or $200 for a team of four. The price includes 18 holes of golf, cart, lunch and prizes.
