DEAR SUNSPOTS: Regarding the July 24 Sun Spots about roofing, I’ve just had my roof completely reshingled and am happy to forward my recommendation to your readers. Don Darling, of Darling & Son’s Roofing (https://www.darlingandsonconstruction.com/, 576-2585) and his crew did an outstanding job of stripping the old shingles, applying a new ice and water shield, underlayment and drip edges, and replacing three old skylights.

All the work was completed in two very long (12 hour-plus) days by an outstanding crew. The work site was kept clean constantly and all waste was carefully gathered and removed in several trailer loads.

I cannot praise Don and his crew more highly.  Please include them in your Rolodex for future inquiries. — Margaret, no town

ANSWER: The company is based in Auburn. Thank you so much for this, Margaret. These recommendations are so valuable and yes, I’ve added it to the Rolodex.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I’m looking for a recommendation for someone to refinish the hardwood floors in my dining and living room area. It would be helpful if the company can also move my furniture as I live alone and would have to hire someone to do the moving for me. — Kathy, Lisbon

ANSWER: Here’s another opportunity to help a fellow Sun Spotter. Send me your recommendations! It will also be good to have recommendations for furniture movers who would just put Kathy’s belongings safely out of the way while the work is being done, then put them all back again.

In the Rolodex, I have TW Flooring in Auburn (https://twflooring207.com/, 241-1606); B & D Floor Sanding in South Portland (https://www.bdfloorsanding.com/, 553-0320); and B & L Hardwood Floors (http://www.blhardwoodfloors.com/, 512-578-5056) in Topsham. Years ago I hired B & L to sand and stain a new floor for my enclosed porch. They did a wonderful job and I would definitely use them again.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: How often should I change the sugar water in my hummingbird feeder? — Emma, no town

ANSWER: That depends on where the hummingbird feeder is located. Ideally, it should be in partial sun where it will best attract hummingbirds.

This time of year, if it doesn’t get too warm, your partially shaded feeder would need to be changed every few days, but if the feeder is in full sun or the temperatures stay higher, your best bet is to change the sugar water every day.

When changing the nectar, always wash the feeder thoroughly using a bottle brush to get into all the nooks and crannies and rinse it well.

Hummingbirds are fascinating little creatures who recognize and remember your face, voice, and habits. Take good care of them and you’ll have the gift of their joyful entertainment for many years to come.
