AUBURN — The Woman’s Literary Union program year will begin Thursday Sept. 8, at 2 p.m., at the clubhouse at 19 Elm St. The program, Step Out from the Crowd, Step Up in the World, Dare to be Different, will be presented by Madelyn G. Given. As a 65-year-old solo woman hiker, Given hiked every day for four months and 10 days beginning in Springer, Ga. and finishing on Aug. 7 at Mt. Katahdin. She hiked 2,175 miles in 14 states over mountains and wilderness terrain.

In addition to running a marathon on every continent and summiting five of the seven summits, Given has continued running marathons and climbing, such as Kanchenjunga in Sikkim. This summer she hiked in the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, Bryce National Park and Zion National Park.

She believes that pursuing a higher goal means taking risks but the personal rewards outnumber the hardships and sacrifices encountered.

Hospitality is provided by Evelyn Larrabee and Camilla Vassar, with refreshments being served. The public is welcome to attend the meeting and program.
