100 Years Ago: 1923

Wednesday evening, June 27th, a minstrel show will be staged at Norway Opera House under the auspices of the Loyal Order of Moose. Garvin Gilman, a character actor and director, will appear with thirty local favorites. Mr. Gilman has played with the “Green Goddess” company and on the Keith Circuit. There will be two one-act plays and a sold act of vaudeville. An evening of fun is promised.

50 Years Ago: 1973

Second District Congressman William Cohen today called upon the Administration to exempt lobster, softshell clams and other commercial seafoods from all aspects of the current 60-day price freeze, citing “severe economic hardship that the fishing industry is facing.”

25 Years Ago: 1998

State officials asked a federal judge Monday to terminate the court order that shaped the way services have been delivered to Maine’s mentally retarded for the past 20 years. Speaking outside the federal courthouse, Mental Health Commissioner Melodie Pect hailed the request as a milestone both for her department and the plaintiffs whose lawsuit led to the 1978 Pineland consent decree. The Pineland Center was shut down two years ago as part of a plan to place residents in smaller, community-based homes, making Maine only the fourth state to complete such a transition.
