Manchester City clinched a third straight English Premier League title after second-placed Arsenal lost at Nottingham Forest 1-0 to cap its end-of-season collapse on Saturday.
City holds an unassailable four-point lead, with Arsenal – the once longtime leader – having only one game remaining. It is City’s seventh league crown in a 12-year period during which the Abu Dhabi-owned club has changed the face of the English game.
City’s latest title is the fifth in Pep Guardiola’s seven years at the club and owes as much to its end-of-season streak of 11 straight victories as it does to an implosion by Arsenal, just when a first league title since 2004 was in sight.
Arsenal led by eight points on April 1 but has since won only two of eight games.
City has its sights on becoming just the second team to capture the Premier League-FA Cup-Champions League treble, with two finals still to play.
The FA Cup final against Manchester United is on June 3 at Wembley Stadium, followed by a meeting with Inter Milan in the Champions League final on June 10.
• Manchester United is one point away from Champions League qualification after a 1-0 win at Bournemouth, paired with Liverpool’s 1-1 draw at Aston Villa.
• Harry Kane scored in perhaps his final home appearance for Tottenham, but Bryan Mbeumo scored twice and set up another goal in the second half as Brentford rallied for a 3-1 win.
U-20 WORLD CUP: An injury-time blast by Jonathan Gomez gave the United States a 1-0 win against Ecuador in their opening match of the Under-20 World Cup in Argentina.
After little inspiration from both teams, Gomez’s shot from the edge of the box one minute before the final whistle beat goalkeeper Gilmar Napa.
GERMANY: Bayern Munich squandered its control of the Bundesliga when Leipzig came from behind to win 3-1, giving Dortmund the chance to move to the top ahead of the final round.
Bayern just needed to win its last two games to claim its record-extending 11th consecutive title, but Leipzig’s shock win in Munich gave Dortmund the upper hand.
Dortmund is at Augsburg on Sunday. If it wins that game, as well as its final game at home against Mainz next weekend, Dortmund would end Bayern’s 10-year reign as German champion.
BASEBALL
EASTERN LEAGUE: The Portland Sea Dogs were rained out Saturday against the Hartford Yard Goats and will play a doubleheader Sunday in Hartford, Connecticut.
BASKETBALL
WNBA: Arike Ogunbowale scored 20 of her 27 points as Dallas built a 17-point halftime lead and the Wings beat the Atlanta Dream 85-78 in the season opener for both teams at Arlington, Texas.
Satou Sabally added 25 points and Natasha Howard had 20 points, 10 rebounds, three steals and two blocks for Dallas. Howard, a three-time WNBA champion and the league’s 2019 defensive player of the year, was acquired in a trade in January.
TENNIS
ITALIAN OPEN: Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina won her second title this year when Ukrainian opponent Anhelina Kalinina retired because of a left thigh injury early in the second set in Rome.
Holger Rune and Daniil Medvedev will meet in Sunday’s men’s final. Rune advanced with a 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-2 comeback win over Casper Ruud. Medvedev beat Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-5, 7-5 in a match that was suspended twice for a total of nearly 4½ hours because of rain.
HOCKEY
WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS: The United States shut out Denmark 3-0 in Tampere, Finland, to stay undefeated and clinch a spot in the quarterfinals.
Alex Tuch scored one goal and added two assists to lead the U.S. a fifth straight victory.
Switzerland rallied from a goal behind to top Canada 3-2 in a clash of undefeated teams in Riga, Latvia.
CYCLING:
GIRO d’ITALIA: Nico Denz sprinted to his second victory in three days after almost celebrating too early, while Bruno Armirail became the first Frenchman this century to wear the overall leader’s pink jersey.
Denz lifted his arms in celebration as he crossed the line at the end of the 14th stage in Cassano Magnago, Italy, but he appeared not to have spotted Derek Gee on his right. However, the German cyclist edged Gee by half a wheel.
Denz, who rides for Bora-Hansgrohe, won Thursday’s 12th stage for his first victory in a Grand Tour, in his sixth Giro.
The overall favorites rolled across the line more than 21 minutes behind Denz. That moved Armirail into the overall lead and gave previous leader Geraint Thomas a night off from podium celebrations and news conferences, and an early recovery ahead of a tough day in the mountains on Sunday.
