BETHEL — The SAD 44 school board met to approve its warrant, moving it one step closer to approval at the polls on June 13. The next hurdle is the public hearing at Telstar on Wed., May 24 at 6:30 p.m.
Fourteen members and one baby, Waylon Erickson, eight weeks old, and son of member Stephanie Erickson were in attendance at Telstar’s library last Monday night.
Superintendent David Murphy confirmed a scheduled visit by Senator Angus King to Telstar’s graduation on June 9.
Reading Mark Kenney’s principal’s report, Murphy recognized two students: Gabby Groves who was awarded the Principal’s Award and Janna Botka, who is this year’s recipient of the River Fund Maine Scholarship and has been awarded $20,000 a year for the next four years at Salve Regina University in Rhode Island. Botka is involved with National Honor Society, the Civil Rights team, drama and band at Telstar. She follows previous award winners from Telstar, Luci Rothwell and Bailey Fraser.
The Telstar Parent Teacher Association (PTA) has elected officers elected for next year: Jamie Miller, president; Marcy Winslow vice president; Amy Marshall secretary; and Heather Kellogg, Treasurer.
Last week the Telstar PTA hosted a social for the staff for Teacher Appreciation Week, and later this month will also be receiving their seedlings from Young’s Greenhouse as a second part of their “thank you”. The Telstar school clothing store is open once again and the link can be found on their Facebook page.
Finally, said Kenney’s report, the PTA provided testing goody bags for all students in grades 6-11 for NWEAs to wish them well on their state testing.
Principal Jess Wilkey of the Woodstock School reported that they elected new officers for PTA president and vice president. They are also planning a field day and events for the staff.
Principal Tanya Arsenault, of Crescent Park School, said her PTA has been focusing on staff appreciation, officer nominations and the field day on June 14.
Region 9 is sending out 175 acceptance letters to incoming students. Open positions at the school are for : a custodian, a building construction instructor, a culinary education tech, a machining instructor (half time) and a fire instructor (half time). The next Region 9 meeting is Wed. June 7.
Michele Cole, representing the Bethel Rotary Club, passed along a gift of $1,000 to be used for music in honor of Ruth Snogren, a lifelong music educator and organist. SAD-44 school board will use the money to purchase a Yamaha console digital piano.
As the meeting came to a close baby Waylon began to stir … his timing perfect.
