VFW post meeting

LEWISTON — The Longley-Dionne VFW Post 9150 will hold their monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16, at the Multi-Purpose Center.

Duplicate bridge

LEWISTON — The Lewiston-Auburn Duplicate Bridge club met on Aug. 9 at the Multi-Purpose Center. Winners were: 1st, Nancy Lindgren and Lucille Theriault; 2nd, Fred Letourneau and Leslie Buzzell; 3rd, Roger Labbe and Larry Fortier. Another game will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16, at the center.

There was no game held on Aug. 10 at Schooner Estates. A game will be played at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17, at Schooner Estates. A partner is guaranteed at all local games. For further information, call Lucille Theriault at 783-0431.

Food bank volunteers

AUBURN — Local AdvancePierre Foods employees from Portland and their families will take part in a community service project on Wednesday, Aug. 17, to support Good Shepherd Food Bank – while in communities across the country AdvancePierre Foods employees will also be volunteering at local food banks as part of an inaugural, company-wide Volunteer Day.

At the site in Auburn, employees will be sorting and organizing food items from noon to 3 p.m. State Sen. Lois Snowe-Mello will speak at the volunteer day.

Budget eating

LEWISTON — “Eating Healthy on a Budget” will be the topic of a presentation set for the Thursday, Aug. 18, meeting of the Central and Western Maine ICD Support Group.

Registered dietitian Meg Ploss will discuss why a healthy diet doesn’t have to be an expensive diet.

The Central and Western Maine ICD Support Group is for individuals who have an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator. Family members and other support persons are also welcomed to attend.

The meeting will be held from 2:30 to 4 p.m. in the Central Maine Heart and Vascular Institute first-floor conference room.

The program is being offered free of charge.

Teacher supplies

LEWISTON — The first 100 teachers visiting Staples stores on Teacher Appreciation Day, Saturday, Aug. 20, from 9 a.m. to noon will receive a reusable lunch bag filled with pens, eraser caps, note tabs, a one-subject notebook, glue sticks and sticky notes. Teachers will also receive a coupon sheet with savings on classroom supplies. Teacher Appreciation Day will be held at the Lewiston-area Staples store, 855 Lisbon St.

Slit weaving

NEW GLOUCESTER — Weave A Wachumacallit is the title of a slit tapestry workshop to be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, at the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village, Route 26. Participants will use a variety of materials to create a bookmark, doll house furnishings, bracelet or a wachumacallit. Just bring scissors. NEW GLOUCESTER — The R & R Spinners will show their extensive traditional skills at a demonstration to be held Saturday, Aug. 20, at the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village, Route 26, beginning at 10 a.m. Free and open to the public.

Summer fair

POLAND — Poland Community Church will hold a summer fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, at 1212 Main St.

A waffle breakfast will be served at 9 a.m. Two yard sales and raffles will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A hot dog lunch with blueberry desserts will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. A take home bean supper will be held at 2 p.m. Donations are needed.

Summer picnic

LEWISTON — Members of Pine Cone Chapter 26, Order of the Eastern Star will have their annual family summer picnic starting at 11 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 21, at the home of Ellie Peterson, 263 Central Ave., rain or shine.

Members should bring meat to grill and a salad or dessert to share. Attendees are welcome to bring bathing suits for a swim in the pool.

Turkey supper

MINOT — The Hebron Historical Society will hold a turkey supper from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21, at the West Minot Grange hall. $8 adults, $4 under 12, complete with beverage and dessert. Proceeds will help pay for the society’s new home.
