HOCKEY
Tim Doherty capped Maine’s five-goal third period with three consecutive goals, and the Mariners clinched an ECHL playoff berth Sunday afternoon with a 5-2 win over the Tulsa Oilers at Cross Insurance Arena.
Maine, which also broke a team record with its 38th win, trailed 2-0 entering the third period but tied the game on goals by Reid Stefanson and Mitch Fossier just over two minutes apart. Fossier and Alex-Olivier Voyer then assisted on Doherty’s go-ahead goal at 7:59, as well as an insurance tally at 14:01. Doherty completed his hat trick with an empty-net goal.
Mariners goalie Francois Brassard finished with 29 saves.
GOLF
PGA: Corey Conners won the Valero Texas Open for the second time in five years for his second PGA Tour title, closing with a 4-under 68 for a one-stroke victory over rookie Sam Stevens in San Antonio.
Conners had a 15-under 273 total.
Stevens (66) eagled the 17th but missed a 9-foot birdie putt at 18 that would have tied it.
LPGA: Ruoning Yin became the second Chinese winner in LPGA Tour history, holding off Georgia Hall in the DIO Implant LA Open.
Yin, 20, closed with a 1-under 70 for a one-stroke victory over Hall, an English player whose 5-foot birdie try on the 18th slid by the right side of the cup.
Yin finished at 15-under 269.
LIV: Brooks Koepka became the first multiple winner in LIV Golf when he closed with a 3-under 68 for a one-shot victory over Sebastian Munoz in Orlando, Florida.
TENNIS
MIAMI OPEN: Daniil Medvedev captured his fourth ATP title of the year, beating Jannik Sinner 7-5, 6-3 to move to 6-0 in their career matchup.
Medvedev has won 24 of his last 25 matches. His only loss was against world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz in last week’s final at Indian Wells.

ENGLAND: Chelsea ran out of patience with Graham Potter, firing the manager with the club languishing in the middle of the Premier League standings.
The team announced Potter’s departure a day after a 2-0 loss to Aston Villa that left Chelsea in 11th place, and nearly seven months after taking a gamble on him as the replacement for the fired Thomas Tuchel.
n Relegation-threatened Leicester fired Manager Brendan Rodgers in a late-season bid to preserve its Premier League status after the team’s sharp decline.
n Joe Willock and Callum Wilson scored second-half goals to lead Newcastle to a 2-0 win over Manchester United, lifting the hosts into third place in the Premier League, ahead of United on goal differential.
AUTO RACING
INDYCAR: Josef Newgarden won at Texas Motor Speedway for the second consecutive year when a thrilling wheel-to-wheel battle with Pato O’Ward came to a sudden halt because of a crash behind them.
Newgarden and O’Ward – at one point the only two drivers on the lead lap – frantically swapped the lead over and over during the final third of the race. The two even bumped wheels at nearly 215 mph with two laps remaining.
But then Romain Grosjean crashed while running fifth as the leaders took the white flag, IndyCar threw the caution, and Newgarden won under yellow. It was the third career victory at Texas for Newgarden, who won in a Chevrolet for Team Penske. He led a race-high 123 of the 250 laps.
FORMULA ONE: Red Bull’s Max Verstappen claimed his first Australian Grand Prix in remarkable circumstances after a chaotic race filled with drama from the green light to the checkered flag.
Although Red Bull’s first triumph in Melbourne since 2011 was expected, the carnage that unfolded in the latter stages of the race at Albert Park made it an extremely hard-fought win.
Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, who drove superbly in his Mercedes, finished second, and Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso took third.
Only 12 of the 20 starters finished the race.
