DEAR SUNSPOTS: By the Silver Spur in Mechanic Falls my spouse and I are hearing a very loud whirring machine sound. It could be a generator, HVAC in need of repair, or some kind of industrial machine.

This goes on 24/7 and runs continuously for hours then stops for about 10 minutes and starts all over again and gets louder depending on the wind direction and at night. This noise goes right through the house we live in and adversely affects our quality of life and ability to sleep.

It is not a train which goes through on occasion and does not sound the same. I have heard it on Lewiston Street in Mechanic Falls, on Route 121 in Poland to Minot, and across the river in Minot back toward Mechanic Falls, but I cannot pinpoint the origin of the noise.

Someone who has noise testing equipment and experience in this kind of thing is needed. We would appreciate anyone who can help. —

ANSWER: That sounds torturous. Are any other readers in this area hearing this noise? It is most likely coming from a local business that may have new equipment. If any readers can add information, please do, and if you own a sound level meter, here’s your chance to use it and help out the neighborhood.

In the meantime, I urge you to speak with the town office regarding this concern. They are there to help you with these kinds of issues and at the very least, need to know about it.

You may also want to get advice from a noise monitoring professional. I found two companies in Brunswick that provide sound level studies and monitoring, Bodwell EnviroAcoustics (http://www.bodwellenviroacoustics.com/) and Resource Systems Engineering Inc. (http://www.resourcesystemsengineering.com/).

DEAR SUN SPOTS: We have an older La-Z-Boy loveseat/sofa bed to give to someone who could use extra seating with sleeping potential. The bed is larger than a twin but smaller than a double. It is sturdy, clean, and in excellent condition. The fabric on the front of the cushions is a bit worn but could easily be repaired, using the material from the arm covers. ANSWER: I hope this furniture goes to a home where it is really needed. Thank you for offering it up and let us know how it goes. In the small chance that you don’t have anyone respond, try reaching out to a local church to see if anyone in the congregation can use it or knows someone who could.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I’m looking for Sun Spots reader recommendations for a few things within 25 miles of where I live: a spa that specializes in facials for women over 65 with sensitive skin; a tai chi class in the area and/or a yoga studio with gentle yoga classes; and a personal trainer who also specializes in helping senior women keep and regain muscle tone. I’m hoping to see lots of recommendations with personal testimonies. — Lisa, Lisbon Falls

ANSWER: This is an assignment for all you Sun Spotters and a good chance to plump up the Rolodex with the info.
