Bryce Afthim pitched a five-hitter and University of Southern Maine baseball coach Ed Flaherty got his 1,100 career victory Sunday as the Huskies defeated Johns Hopkins, 8-3, in the RussMatt Invitational in Auburndale, Florida.
Flaherty’s overall record is 1,100-498-4 in 38 seasons. He’s third in wins among active NCAA Division III coaches.
Jason Komulainen and Arlo Pike each drove in two runs, and Cam Seymour hit an RBI double for his 100th career RBI.
USM improved to 2-8. Johns Hopkins is 12-2.
COLBY 5, WASHINGTON & JEFFERSON 0: Brady O’Brien hit a two-run homer and three pitchers combined on a four-hitter as the Mules (5-2) shut out the Presidents (7-3) in Lake Myrtle, Florida.
Nicholas Thompson pitched six innings, striking out eight while allowing four hits and one walk.
SOFTBALL
USM LOSES TWICE: Wisconsin-Whitewater (2-0) scored twice in the eighth inning to complete a doubleheader sweep against Southern Maine (2-8) with a 4-2 win in Clermont, Florida.
Rona Scott singled home USM’s only run in a 3-1 loss in the opener. Scott and Lauren Merrill each had two of USM’s seven hits in Game 2.
COLBY SWEEPS: Amanda Cabral and Chloe Wilcox each drove in five runs as Colby (5-1) picked up a pair of five-inning wins in Clermont, Florida, 12-2 over Union (0-3) and 13-1 over Keuka (0-1).
Wilcox was 3 for 3 with a home run and three RBI against Union. Clarissa Cassidy went 3 for 4 and scored four runs.
Jackie Hill and Victoria Ramirez homered against Keuka, while Cabral and Kathryne Clay drove in three runs apiece.
BATES SPLITS: Kennedy Jones hit a two-run homer in the first inning and finished with four RBI to lead the Bobcats (1-1) to a 9-3 win over Old Westbury (1-1) in Clermont, Florida.
Madison Hollis added two doubles and scored three times, and Cassidy Musco was 3 for 4 with an RBI and two runs.
Earlier, Hollis doubled home the only run for Bates in a 7-1 loss to Grinnell (3-2).
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
COLBY 13, WESLEYAN 12: Paige Saudek’s third goal of the game, with 4:04 remaining, lifted the Mules (2-3, 1-2 NESCAC) over the Cardinals (5-1, 1-1) in Waterville.
Gianna Bruno finished with three goals and three assists for Colby. Julia Jardina and Elizabeth Hennessey each scored twice.
WOMEN’S HOCKEY
WISCONSIN 1, OHIO STATE 0: Kirsten Simms scored and Cami Kronish made 31 saves to help Wisconsin (29-10-2) beat top-seeded and defending champion Ohio State, earning the Badgers their record seventh NCAA title.
Simms flicked a wrister into the goal to give Wisconsin the lead at 13:28 of the first period.
Wisconsin has won three of the last four national titles and have appeared in 14 of the last 17 Frozen Fours.
Ohio State (33-6-2), which averaged more than four goals per game, was shut out for the first time in its last 57 games.
