GREENSBORO, N.C. — The All-American performances continued for the Bates men’s and women’s swim teams at the NCAA Division III championships Thursday.
The men’s 200-meter freestyle relay team finished seventh in the championship final to earn first-team All-America honors. The Bobcats foursome of Maximillian Cory, Nathan Berry, Nate Pierce and John Marcolina finished in a time of 1:21.11, beating their prelim time of 1:21.21 and their seed time of 1:21.25.
The Bobcats women placed 16th overall and eighth in the consolation final of the 200 free relay to earn second-team All-America honors. The quartet of Abigail Gibbons, Grace Wenger, Sophie Cassily and Marjorie McLeod finished with a time of 1:35.66.
Individually, Wenger also earned first-team All-America honors for the Bates women with her eighth-place finish in the 200 free championship final. After swimming her way into the final with a prelim time of 1:49.95, Wenger clocked in at 1:51.41 in the championship race.
On the men’s side, Mark Gregory placed 24th in the 200 free prelims with a time of 1:40.36. That smashed his seed time of 1:42.77.
The women’s 400-meter medley relay team finished 11th overall and third in the consolation final to earn second-team All-America honors. Cassily, Gibbons, Natalie Young and Wenger completed the distance in 3:47.06, beating their ninth-ranked prelim time of 3:47.10.
The men’s 400 medley relay team entered the championships seeded ninth, with a time of 3:16.12, but suffered a disqualification in the prelims due to an early take-off by one of its swimmers.
The top 16 finishers in each event earn All-American honors.
The Division III championships continue through Saturday.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
BATES’ GRAFF EARNS WBCA HONOR: Bates College senior Meghan Graff was named honorable mention Division III All-American by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association on Thursday.
It’s the latest in a growing list of accolades for the guard from South Portland, who this season broke the Bates women’s program record for career points.
Graff was one of 40 players named to the honorable mention list, with the WBCA also naming 10 All-America team players. She is the eighth Bobcat to receive All-America recognition from the WBCA, and the first since Val Beckwith in 2009.
COLLEGE SOFTBALL
UMF COLLECTS FIRST WIN: After giving up four runs in the top of the first, University of Maine at Farmington (1-6) scored the rest of the game’s runs to rally past Cairn (1-5) in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
The Beavers scored three runs each in the fourth and fifth innings and four in the sixth.
Lewiston grad Bella Miller and Oxford Hills grad Christa Allen each collected two hits, as did Maddie Pike. One of Pike’s hits was a double as she drove in four runs and scored three. Allen had three RBIs, Lisbon grad Kiley Merritt scored three runs and Miller scored two.
Carleigh Schievink earned the win in the circle, scattering seven hits across 5 2/3 innings while striking out four. Grace Martin grabbed the save by recording the final four outs, allowing just one hit and one walk.
CMCC SPLITS: The Mustangs (3-3) suffered a heartbreaking loss in their first game of the day Thursday in Myrtle Beach before turning around and winning another nailbiter in their second game.
Central Maine lost 2-1 in walk-off fashion against College of DuPage, then edged Adirondack Community College 3-2.
In the first game, Emily Wormwood drove in the lone Mustang run with a sixth-inning double. Olivia Scott took the loss in the circle despite a strong outing, scattering five hits and striking out 10. Scott also added a hit at the plate, and Paige Ouellette had a hit as well.
In the second game, the Mustangs scored all their runs in the fourth. Riley McNamara singled in one run and Scott singled in two more. Scott collected two hits in the game, with McNamara, Wormwood, Sarah Poli and Dirigo grad Alyvia Perreault each adding one.
Scott got the start again, allowing two runs and one hit while striking out five in three innings. McNamara earned the win, tossing four shutout innings while allowing one hit and one walk while striking out three batters.
COLLEGE BASEBALL
MCCC 8, CMCC 1: Montgomery County Community College scored three runs in the bottom of the second, then after Central Maine CC scored its lone run in the top of the third, Montgomery County CC plated four more in the bottom of the frame to pull away in Myrtle Beach.
Lisbon grad Mason Booker reached base three times for Central Maine, including drawing two walks and collecting one of CM’s four hits. Gray-New Gloucester grad Zach Mann drove in the lone run for Central Maine.
