MEN’S BASKETBALL
UMF 75, UMPI 72: Kyle Donlin hit a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 54 seconds remaining to lift the Beavers (12-7, 8-1 NAC) past the Owls (6-11, 3-5) in Presque Isle.
Donlin finished with 11 points. His UMaine-Farmington teammate Terion Moss led all scorers with 38 poinTs, including five 3-pointers. Drew Storey added 12 points and 10 rebounds. Jack Kane also grabbed 10 rebounds and had five blocks.
The Beavers, who led 32-29 at halftime, trailed by as many as seven points in the second half. Moss gave them a 72-70 lead with a three-point play with 1:14 left, but KJ Minter’s layup for UMaine-Presque Isle a few seconds later tied the game at 72-72. After a turnover by Moss, Donlin blocked a shot at the other end to regain possession for UMF, then Moss set up Donlin for the game-winner.
Griffin Guerrette led UMPI with 21 points. Minter had 11 points and 16 rebounds, while Danny Harris added 11 points and Charlie Mellick scored 10.
MIDDLEBURY 81, BATES 64: The Panthers (16-2,5-1) erupted with 46 points in the second half to overpower the Bobcats (7-11,1-4) in Middlebury, Vermont.
The Bobcats scored only 27 points in the second half. The Panthers had slim 37-35 lead after the first half.
Middlebury had four players turning double-digit performances, Alex Sobel leading the way with 23 points. Sam Stevens, Noah Osher and David Brennan scored 13, 11 and 10 points respectively.
Bates’ Steph Baxter supplied a team-high 21 points along with five rebounds and three steals.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
BATES 72, MIDDLEBURY 59: Meghan Graf scored 26 points and went 6 for 8 from the foul line as the Bobcats (9-8, 2-3) rolled past the Panthers (11-8, 3-3) in Lewiston.
Sophie Polter add 13 points for the Bobcats, who had a strong first half and built a 39-30 lead at halftime.
Alexa Mustafaj scored the team-high 23 points for Middlebury and teammate Augusta Dixon supplied 14 points.
UMPI 74, UMF 47: The Owls (8-6) used a 27-9 second quarter to pull away from the Beavers (2-15) in Presque Isle.
UMaine-Presque Isle’s Emily Wheaton led all scorers with 22 points. Alexis Ireland added 14 to the win, and Kourtney West scored 11.
Victoria Garland was UMaine-Farmington’s high scorer with 11 points. Jacqui Hamilton finished with nine points and Ruby McMinis had eight.
WOMEN”S HOCKEY
UMAINE 5, UCONN 4, OT: Grace Heiting scored an unassisted goal in overtime as the Black Bears (13-14-1, 10-10-1 Hockey East) beat the Huskies (16-9-3, 10-8-3) in Orono.
Ava Stevenson, Anna Caumo, Ally Johnson and Ida Kuoppala also scored for Maine. Anna LaRose had 27 saves.
Jada Habisch, Kyla Josifovic, Claire Peterson and Coryn Tormala scored and Megan Warrener had 25 saves for UConn.
MEN’S HOCKEY
MAINE 3, PROVIDENCE 2: Dawson Bruneski scored with less than five minutes left in the third period and the University of Maine beat Providence 3-2 in a men’s Hockey East game in Orono.
Jakob Sirota scored less than two minutes earlier for the Black Bears (10-12-2, 4-8-1 Hockey East), tying the game at 2-2. Lynden Breen scored in the second period. Victor Ostman had 29 saves for Maine.
Didrik Henbrant, Nick Poisson and Craig Needham scored for Providence (12-8-6, 7-4-5), which took a 3-0 lead.
CROSS COUNTRY
BATES RUNNERS HONORED: Members of the women’s track team, including Junior Jen Coseno, first-year Elizabeth Holcombe, senior Frieda Kickliter, sophomore Phoebe Pohl, senior captain Jillian Richardson of Auburn, senior captain Jordan Wilson, and senior Ilana Zeilinger, all qualified to join the USTFCCCA All-Academic roster.
Richardson went the distance for the Bobcats after earning All-American honors at the NCAA Championships, where she finished 28th out of 293 competitors with her time of of 22:36.4 Bates finished 14th at the event.
Senior captain Eli Boesch Dining, junior captain Ned Farrington, juniors Sam Kartsonis and Victor Kering, and sophomore Andrew Mottur were also recipients of USTFCCCA All-Academic honors for the men’s cross country team. Boesch Dining helped steer the Bobcats to 22nd finish at the NCAA Championships.
To qualify for the honor list, the Bobcat runners must have GPA of 3.30 or higher and finish in the top 25 percent at their regional championship.
