Caroline Bornemann and Jaycie Christopher each set a career high while combining for 55 points Sunday, and Maine ended a four-game losing streak with an 88-60 win over Army in a women’s basketball game in Orono.

Bornemann, a junior, scored 29 points, surpassing her previous high of 21 from last season. She also grabbed nine rebounds as Maine improved to 4-7.

Christopher, a freshman from Skowhegan, more than doubled her previous high of 12 points. She made 7 of 10 3-pointers and finished with 26 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Adrianna Smith contributed 14 points and six assists despite playing only 17 minutes.

Sam McNaughton scored 14 points for Army (2-7), which is coached by former UMaine player Missy Traversi.

(1) SOUTH CAROLINA 88, LIBERTY 39: Zia Cooke scored a season-high 20 points and the Gamecocks (9-0) routed the Flames (3-5) at Columbia, South Carolina.

(3) OHIO STATE 74, MICHIGAN STATE 68: Taylor Thierry scored a career-high 21 points and Taylor Mikesell added 16 as the Buckeyes (10-0, 2-0 Big Ten) beat the Spartans (6-5, 0-2) in Columbus, Ohio.

(20) MARYLAND 85, (6) UCONN 78: Abby Meyers scored 18 of her 20 points in the first half, and Diamond Miller made a huge 3-pointer in the final minute to help the Terrapins (9-3) hold off the depleted Huskies (7-2) in College Park, Maryland.

Aaliyah Edwards had 25 points for UConn. The Huskies have been without former national player of the year Paige Bueckers, forward Dorka Juhasz and highly touted freshman Ice Brady. They also lost leading scorer Azzi Fudd to an injured knee in a loss at Notre Dame last weekend, and point guard Nika Muhl was hurt during a win over Princeton on Thursday night.

(7) VIRGINIA TECH 86, UNC ASHEVILLE 48: Taylor Soule scored 21 points to lead the Hokies (10-0) to an easy win over the Bulldogs (4-4) in Blacksburg, Virginia.

(8) NORTH CAROLINA STATE 65, SOUTH FLORIDA 57: Diamond Johnson scored 14 points before a first-half injury, at Wolfpack (9-1) held off South Florida (8-3) in Raleigh, North Carolina.

(8) NORTH CAROLINA 99, WOFFORD 67: The Tar Heels (8-1) made a season-high 12 3-pointers and recorded a season-high point total in a win over the Terriers (7-3) at Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

(10) IOWA STATE 84, JACKSONVILLE 50: Ashley Joens scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Cyclones (7-2) rolled past the Dolphins (5-3) in Ames, Iowa.

(21) ARKANSAS 77, ARKANSAS STATE 63: Samara Spencer scored 19 points, leading five players in double figures, and the Razorbacks (12-0) overcame poor shooting to defeat the Red Wolves (4-5) in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

(23) OKLAHOMA 94, ROBERT MORRIS 65: Liz Scott scored 16 points, one of six players in double figures for the Sooners (8-1) in a win over the Colonials (6-4) at Norman, Oklahoma.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

MAINE 50, MERRIMACK 47: The Black Bears (6-4) took the lead with a 14-2 run early in the second half and held on for a win over the Warriors (2-11) in North Andover, Massachusetts.

Kellen Tynes led Maine with 12 points and also had five steals. Peter Filipovity added 11 points and Gedi Juozapaitis had 10.

Jordan Minor scored 19 points for Merrimack, which missed two 3-point attempts in the final 12 seconds.

BOWDOIN 61, HUSSON 54: James McGowan sank a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 1:30 remaining and finished with 24 points as the Polar Bears (5-6) rallied from a 10-point deficit to beat the Eagles (3-6) in Bangor.

Nolan Bessire chipped in with 10 points.

Scott Lewis led Husson with 13 points.

(7) TENNESSEE 56, (13) MARYLAND 53: Zakai Zeigler scored 12 points, including a key 3 late in the second half as the Volunteers (9-1) held off the Terrapins (8-2) in a Basketball Hall of Fame Invitational matchup in New York.

Tennessee led by as many as 18 points in the first half before Maryland pulled within two points in the final minutes.

FOOTBALL

NAVY: Coach Ken Niumatalolo is out after 15 seasons at the helm.

The academy announced that Niumatalolo would not return – a day after the Midshipmen lost to Army in overtime and finished 4-8 for the second straight year. Niumatalolo is the winningest coach in school history at 109-83, but after going 11-2 in 2019, Navy hasn’t finished above .500 since.
